Lee Gates

Lee Gates lived and hybridized in Prairieville, Louisiana in the last years of his life. His Hobby Garden was a favorite on the local Baton Rouge Daylily tour and regional tours.

Known for his colorful blooms as well as the colorful names he delighted in giving them, Lee was an unforgettable character and fine hybridizer.  His reds are known all over the country and have set standards for strong pure red.  He is also noted for his fine pale creams, ivory and lavender hybrid cultivars.

Lee was awarded the Bertrand Farr Award for Hybridizing by American Hemerocallis Society in 1997. His cultivars also continue to be honored with many cultivar awards over the years.

Lee is greatly missed in the daylily world of south Louisiana.
